Lessons from Dandelions
What a dandelion seed on a car seat taught me about surrender
This morning, while helping my 7-year-old son climb into the school van, I saw one tiny dandelion seed on his car seat.
It got me thinking.
Dandelions are the bane of the manicured lawn.
Yet, I love their audacity to grow where unwanted, defiantly creating pops of golden yellow against a backdrop of green.
Then, reaching tall, above the height of the grass, they demand even more attention.
And finally, dandelions completely transform, daring the wind to carry their seeds off into the great unknown, surrendering to wherever the currents blow.
I surrender
I surrender
to this moment
this life.
I am present
for what is,
not was, or will be.
I relax my muscles.
I release the tension.
I remove expectations
and choose to be here.
To this life, this moment,
I surrender.
Journaling Prompts
If this piece stirred something in you, these questions are yours to sit with:
I surrender…
I am present to…
What I am ready to release is…
When I stop resisting, I find…
The Invitation
Journaling is how I return to myself. The circle is where I do it in community.
If you’re ready for a dedicated hour to write, reflect, and hear yourself clearly, I’d love to hold that space for you. The From a Whisper to a Roar Journaling Circle meets every other Friday at 9am EST.
For New Readers
If you’re new here — many of these essays grew out of the poems in Barely a Whisper, my poetry memoir. It might be a place to begin. → Find it here
